King and Queen school board hears student showcases, accepts donations and approves Rise guide

Students and principals filled the King and Queen County School Board meeting with presentations on student work and school programs before the board moved on to administrative business and votes.
Teachers and students from King and Queen Central High School led the evening with instructional highlights, including an eighth-grade performance by Kennedy Randall and an AP Literature overview that emphasized student-led podcasts, expert panels and a Royal Inquiry on Hamlet. "AP Literature is more than just reading books. It is a course that challenges us to think deeply, speak thoughtfully, and connect literature to the world around us," an AP Literature student said during the presentation.
The theater program described how drama instruction builds emotional intelligence and community engagement; students said the theater program collected and donated more than 125 food items this year to the school food pantry and reported competition success at regional events. National Honor Society representatives said their chapter has 25 members and described mentoring programs with elementary students and monthly community celebrations.
In business items, the finance presenter reviewed revenue through Feb. 28, 2026, reporting $8,211,493.79 in revenue received year to date and noting food-service reimbursements and expenditures in the packet. The board heard a donations report listing contributions such as $200 to each school from the Chesapeake Chorale and book donations for the mobile library.
A motion to accept the February donations report was made and seconded; a roll-call poll was conducted and named members recorded affirmative votes. The board then considered the Rise guide (previously presented) and approved it by motion. "I make a motion that we approve the Rise guide tonight," a board member said; the chair called the motion passed.
Board members closed the meeting by thanking students, staff and principals for the evening's presentations and noting upcoming agenda items including the Student Code of Conduct and the final Special Education Plan for Improvement.
The board adjourned following public comment and the routine closing motions.
