Teachers' union urges school committee to hold an external superintendent search

Jen Bates spoke during public comment on behalf of the Southwick-Tolland-Granville Educators Association and said the union polled its membership: half of members participated and of those respondents 82% opposed moving forward without a traditional external search for the next superintendent.
"The majority of participating members do not support moving forward without a traditional external search," she said, urging a process that would allow both external and internal candidates to be considered so the district could identify the best fit for students and the community.
Chair Robert Stevenson acknowledged the union's position and asked about poll turnout; after clarifying votes and numbers the chair said opening the search to external candidates would be acceptable so long as the committee retained the ability to hire an internal superintendent-elect if that candidate proved strongest through a competitive process. He warned, however, that external candidate pools are limited nationally and that the district should not assume a large field would materialize.
The committee did not change its timetable at the meeting; members said they wanted to ensure the search would be open and transparent.
