Temecula proclaims April 28 'Kevin Hawkins Day' and honors assistant city manager at council meeting

The Temecula City Council on April 28 proclaimed April 28, 2026, “Kevin Hawkins Day” and paused its regular agenda for a series of tributes honoring Assistant City Manager Kevin Hawkins as he prepares to retire after a 35-year career in public service, including 13 years with the city.

Mayor Pro Tem read a formal proclamation that praised Hawkins’ municipal leadership and listed his prior roles and years of service. Council members, city staff and visiting officials — including Riverside County Supervisor Chuck Washington and representatives from the offices of Assemblywoman Kate Sanchez and Senator Kelly Sardo — took turns offering personal remarks, anecdotes and gratitude.

The recognition included remarks from Mayor Alexander and extended tributes from the mayor pro tem, council members and city staff. In his remarks Hawkins said the day was less about an endpoint and more about “the celebration of the journey,” thanking family, faith leaders and longtime colleagues.

Council members and staff reflected on Hawkins’ leadership through difficult seasons, his impact on community programs and his role mentoring newer officials. Several speakers emphasized his steady temperament and commitment to Temecula; Supervisor Washington noted a long personal friendship and presented a framed proclamation from his office.

The gathering also included a short reception, photo opportunities with staff and family, and presentation of a City Manager of the Year recognition. The council then resumed the agenda and moved on to planning, public-safety and land-use matters.

The council did not take formal policy action tied to the retirement beyond the proclamation. Next steps for any personnel transitions were not discussed on the record at the meeting.
