Klein ISD chief details dispatch upgrades, regional training; board honors students and staff

Chief Marlon Runnels told the Klein ISD Board of Trustees that recent bond-funded security upgrades and a $267,000 federal COPS School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP) grant have strengthened campus safety and emergency response.
"During the remodel, we replaced all four primary dispatch workstations... Our dispatchers now have faster access to critical systems," Runnels said, describing new ergonomic consoles, integrated monitor setups and improved access to the district’s CAD systems, cameras, radios and alarm monitoring.
Runnels said the SVPP grant enabled a $100,000 refresh of the dispatch center for a local out-of-pocket cost of $25,000 and credited cross-departmental work with IT, facilities, emergency management and outside vendors. He also described the district’s Active Attack Integrated Response training, which delivered 15 two-day classes to roughly 380 first responders and totaled more than 5,000 training hours.
The chief said Klein ISD hosted Texas Police Chiefs Association assessors Feb. 25–26 as part of a voluntary Best Practices recognition process and that the district awaits official results.
Dr. Jenny McGowan, the superintendent, thanked Runnels and his staff for the initiatives. Trustees asked about public tours of the dispatch center and were told community visits can be coordinated through the department’s website or by contacting Runnels directly.
Beyond safety, the board recognized students and educators across campuses: Lisa Campbell introduced honorees from French Elementary, Jason Anderson recognized outstanding students and an educator from Hofius Intermediate, and Frank Shooter and directors Sundas Mohi and Hanson Young celebrated the Klein Kane Chamber Orchestra’s first-place finish at the Texas Honor Orchestra Competition and second place nationally at the American String Teachers Association festival.
Amy Thompson highlighted that Hildebrandt Intermediate’s counseling team earned the statewide CREST Award for exemplary school counseling programs, and the communications team was honored with 39 awards this year, including four best-in-state medals.
The meeting experienced video/audio glitches for some recognition content; board leaders said they would post the honored presentations on district social media so the community could view them. The board recessed briefly to meet honorees and reconvened to continue business.
