Committee backs Conway advisory committee’s request to name Rivertown gym for community athlete

The Facilities Committee voted Oct. 20 to forward a Conway Attendance Area Advisory Committee request to the full Horry County Schools board recommending the Rivertown complex gymnasium be named in honor of Willie "Chocolate" Great.
Neil James told the committee the advisory committee voted unanimously to recommend the naming of the gymnasium at the Rivertown complex (the former Whittemore Park Middle off U.S. 378). "They are recommending that the name be Willie Chocolate Great," James said, noting the advisory committee’s unanimous endorsement and that the request will come to the board for final approval.
James described Mr. Great as a standout athlete who played two sports at South Carolina State, went on to play professional football with the Buffalo Bills and later in the World League, and is in the South Carolina State Hall of Fame. Committee members flagged that naming proposals for district-owned adjunct facilities ultimately require board approval; the committee unanimously voted to send the request to the full board as a discussion item in November with a business-item approval expected at the second November meeting.
