Dr. Whiting delivered a statement of acknowledgement honoring Indigenous and diverse communities. “Cheltenham Township stands within the Lenape hokink, the ancestral homeland of the Lenni Lenape civilization,” Dr. Whiting said, and added that the community ‘‘pays respect to their elders, past and present’’ while noting that some people were brought to the area against their will and others came from afar and contributed to the township’s history.
The acknowledgement framed that recognition of truth and history as essential to building mutual respect and community connection. The meeting continued after the acknowledgement.
