Board proclaims Hospital and Nurses Week; Sutter Coast CEO outlines staffing and facility plans

The Del Norte County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a proclamation recognizing Hospital Week (May 10'16, 2026) and Nurses Week (May 6'12, 2026) that singled out Sutter Coast Hospital for recent improvements in clinical services, workforce development and community partnerships.

Mike O. Lane, identified in the record as Sutter Coast Hospital's CEO, addressed the board and outlined staffing and facility plans. He said the hospital has increased permanent full-time staff by about 21%, from roughly 380 to 466 employees, and has reduced reliance on traveling clinicians. Lane said the hospital expects to bring two primary-care physicians (a married couple) to the community over the next 15 months and to recruit a pulmonologist whose family ties should support retention.

Lane also reported operational changes and capital plans: the hospital has launched seven-day-a-week walk-in clinics, is expanding an EMPATH behavioral-health unit (with a ribbon cutting planned for June 9), and has purchased about 6.5 acres for workforce housing that could support roughly 30'40 units to help recruit medical staff. He said timelines depend on regulatory inspections and tenant relocations at a building acquired for outpatient services.

Board members thanked hospital leadership and praised staffing and service expansions as important for the county's rural health care access.
