At a May 26 special meeting, the Everman City Council appointed seven members to a new Parks and Recreation Commission after receiving 11 applications.
City staff recommended appointing Everman ISD athletic director James Polk and several residents to ensure school-district partnership and local programming experience. During discussion staff said the commission’s early priorities will center on Johnson Park baseball and softball programming, with concession revenue viewed as an early funding source to support future park improvements and community events.
A councilmember moved to appoint James Polk, Lamberto Ramirez, Enrique Morello, Manny Gonzalez, Erica Martinez, Erica Campa and Covarrubia Chavez. Council polled and recorded affirmative votes and the motion carried. Several appointed members present were sworn in immediately by staff, repeating an oath to faithfully execute the duties of the Everman Parks and Recreation Commission.
Staff noted that although seven are voting members, applicants who were not appointed can still participate as volunteers or in nonvoting roles; the city plans to establish a Parks and Recreation department within the upcoming budget to track revenues and expenditures for the program.
