Local psychotherapist Colette Jane Fair discusses 'self‑silencing' and communication at women's forum

Colette Jane Fair, a licensed psychotherapist and local author of The Cost of Quiet, told the Mayor Demings Women’s History Month Forum that many relationship problems stem not from the issues themselves but from a pattern she calls "self‑silencing." Fair said avoiding hard conversations can lead to long‑term resentment and adverse health outcomes and presented a practical communication process she calls "self‑connected communication."

Using personal experience and clinical examples, Fair described how avoidance accumulates into what she terms the "cave of resentment" and said the antidote is preparation: identify bodily sensations that signal activation, name the specific emotion and related need, pick one issue to raise, and frame the conversation with I‑statements to express vulnerability and preserve relationships. She recommended short, specific requests and cautioned against delivering a litany of grievances in a single discussion.

Fair also addressed workplace conflict, advising attendees to adapt the same preparation and vulnerability principles while keeping appropriate professional boundaries. She answered audience questions on discerning when to leave a financially dependent relationship, recommended practical planning (financial and legal) before major decisions, and encouraged attendees to seek therapy, legal advice or employee assistance resources when needed.

Fair will be available for a book signing during lunch, and organizers provided QR codes and postcards linking to her book and resources.
