Spencer Elementary students pair up for 'Book Buddies'; teacher DaVita Truex honored

At the April 9 Spencer-Owen board meeting Spencer Elementary staff described a multiyear Book Buddies program that pairs sixth-grade students with second-graders for reading and related projects.
Teacher Denise Barr told the board the program meets roughly a few times a year (with a goal of once a month) and aligns with standards while building creativity and mentoring: second-graders design a character and sixth-graders create a felt puppet and a small book for them. Students at the meeting described favorite activities such as "Turkey Trouble" and making a felt monster.
The board also paused for a recognition: the "You Make a Difference" award was presented to DaVita (transcript spelling varies DaVita/Davida) Truex. In introducing the award, an administrator read colleagues’ notes praising DaVita’s warmth, inclusivity, and results in the classroom, saying, "DaVita shows unwavering dedication to every child, never hesitating to step in and help..." The presenter noted more than 95% of her students passed for four consecutive years and that last year the rate was 100%.
Board members and administrators congratulated the teacher and thanked presenters for showcasing the Book Buddies partnership. The board encouraged the public to attend upcoming school events, including STEAM night and the art show.
The board approved its agenda items and then moved on to other business.
