Oak Brook Park District hires landscaper, approves waste contract and selects 'Fit Central' as fitness-center name

At its March 17 meeting the Oak Brook Park District Board rejected a lower mowing bid and approved a contract with Advanced Landscaping for weekly mowing at a not-to-exceed cost of $1,713 and accepted an alternate fall leaf-cleanup price not to exceed $2,600. Commissioner Suleiman moved the mowing contract approval and Commissioner Ivkovic Kelley seconded; the roll call vote was unanimous.
Commissioner Suleiman asked why fall cleanup cost more than weekly mowing; Deputy Director Bob Johnson responded that fall cleanup is more labor intensive because it involves cleaning beds and cutting back vegetation and that Advanced Landscaping lacks commercial experience. "I will attempt to renegotiate the fall cleanup cost," Johnson said.
The Board also accepted a proposal from SBC Waste Solutions, Inc. for waste and recycling collection services with a monthly cost not-to-exceed $660. Commissioner Vescovi asked whether winter pickup volumes are lower; Johnson said pickup frequency and costs are adjusted based on seasonal demand. The motion to approve SBC Waste Solutions passed by roll call vote, with all members voting yes.
In communications items, Deputy Director Bob Johnson reported that a public process selected "Fit Central" as the Fitness Center's new name. Board staff also reported that the District plans to include audio recording of meetings in next year's budget.
During public comment, Oak Brook resident Jim DePhillips asked the Board to correct a misidentified speaker in past minutes and raised questions about recordings and a recently added "Agency" FAQ section on the District website, saying the FAQ "appears to address a campaign" and that it should be removed. Executive Director Dr. Laure Kosey said staff will work with the Board on the recording logistics.
The Board later entered closed session for a semi-annual review of closed meeting minutes and personnel matters (including a resolution to review closed minutes from January 1989 through February 2025) and returned to open session before adjourning at 7:21 p.m.
