Town planner briefs board on state housing laws and $15,000 grant to help update ordinances

EJ Roach, Orono’s town planner and economic development staff, briefed the Planning Board on recently enacted state legislation (LD 1829, LD 427 and LD 997) that will require the town to amend local ordinances to conform with new state housing law.
Roach said the town applied for and received a $15,000 grant from the state housing office to offset consultant or attorney costs to draft the ordinance changes. He urged board members to review the summary materials distributed at the meeting and said the municipality must work through public‑notice timelines and aim for council adoption of the ordinance updates by July 1.
Board members noted the timing overlaps with ongoing comprehensive plan revisions. Roach also flagged forthcoming applications the board will see, including a clustered subdivision at 76 Kelly Road (14 new units plus renovation of a farmhouse for a total of 15 units) returning for final approval.
