City announces multiple grants and funding wins, including EPA awards and cops-hire plan

Shamonkin’s city manager detailed a string of grant awards and funding applications at the June council meeting, citing new federal and local funding that the city expects to use for building remediation, public safety hiring and neighborhood rehabilitation.
The city manager said the city applied for a $300,000 home-rehabilitation program that can cover up to $65,000 per house and noted there are currently 73 people on the waiting list. “There are 73 people on the wait list,” the city manager said, noting that the city does not directly manage the placement list and provided contact information for the administering agency.
On public-safety funding, the city manager announced a $375,000 cops-hire plan budgeted to cover three years of support for the police department. “That would be for 3 years,” the city manager said, adding the council will vote on acceptance of the plan.
The manager also reported federal funding prospects: a $500,000 congressional appropriation was received for the American Legion, with an additional $2,000,000 request pending; an $882,000 local-share gaming allocation was pursued for recent fire-company support; a swim-instruction grant was awarded to help offset instruction costs; and the city secured $1,500,000 in EPA funds and a separate $1,000,000 EPA revolving loan fund targeted at environmental contamination remediation and reuse planning.
The city manager said the hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) study was successful and that the city’s comprehensive plan and zoning rewrite is underway with a consultant assigned. The manager also flagged a new AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer joining via Bucknell in coming weeks.
What’s next: Several of the funds are pending final approvals or additional application steps; council members asked for follow-up and the city manager said more details would be provided as applications and awards are finalized.
