Charter Commission elects Marina chair, names Dave Barker vice chair and sets Nov. 18 public hearing

The Waterboro Charter Commission elected Marina as its chair and selected Dave Barker as vice chair during its organizational meeting, and set a public hearing on proposed charter changes for Saturday, Nov. 18 at 10 a.m.

Marina, a member of the commission, accepted the chair nomination, saying, "If this is what the board wants, I will accept it." A member nominated Dave Barker for vice chair and the commission approved that selection with no recorded opposition on the vice-chair vote.

The commission also voted to change its regular meeting schedule to the second and fourth Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. after members discussed difficulties some had with earlier start times and weekday conflicts.

Why it matters: The leadership choices and new schedule set who will shepherd the charter review and when the commission will meet the public. The Nov. 18 public hearing will be the first major opportunity for residents to comment on possible charter changes.

Commission members discussed outreach for the hearing, including postcards, flyers, the town website, Facebook posts and text alerts. A commission member offered to produce postcard templates and coordinate postings: "I can always create something that Dave could upload," Marina said, offering to assist with materials and digital postings.

What’s next: The commission directed staff and members to publicize the Nov. 18 hearing through multiple channels and to proceed under the new meeting schedule. No legislative or charter changes were adopted at the meeting; the public hearing is intended to collect feedback before any formal proposals are finalized.
