Meridian council to press Ada County after rising rat sightings; council considers emergency request

Meridian City Council members told their colleagues on May 26 they have received growing public reports of rat sightings and traps, and several urged the city to press Ada County for a coordinated response.
Councilman Robertson said recent reports show residents tracking sightings across the valley and urged the city to take a leadership role: "I think we as a city need to stand up and take the lead and draft this letter... and hopefully get other communities in Ada County and even beyond to follow suit," he said. Councilwoman LaRouitz described meeting a household that had trapped about 27–30 rats over several months and noted a local website tracking sightings.
Council members discussed a draft letter and the option of asking county commissioners to declare an emergency so county abatement resources could be mobilized. Councilman Kevin said waiting for a legislative fix would be "against the ticking clock" and voiced support for sending the letter and urging the county to begin the assessment and response process immediately.
Mayor Simnison said staff would start with the existing draft letter, circulate it for signatures and share it with Treasure Valley Partnership members to encourage regional support. Council did not adopt any ordinance or make a formal emergency declaration at the work session; it agreed to proceed with the intergovernmental advocacy steps described above.
