Millis announces football co-op with Norfolk Aggie for fall season

The superintendent updated the committee on a newly formed football cooperative with Norfolk Aggie that will take effect this coming fall. Under the agreement, Millis High School will serve as the host school, providing coaches and use of the field while members of Norfolk Aggie will join the program as participating student athletes.

Committee members and the superintendent emphasized safety and insurance arrangements. The superintendent explained that family insurance is primary and that the secondary coverage and catastrophic protection are provided through the MIAA/MIA program. He described the system as: student insurance first, secondary school-provided coverage next, and catastrophic coverage for larger claims. Members also discussed transportation arrangements and noted prior examples where grants (for example, a coach’s grant from a foundation during a past co-op) had been used to support travel.

Committee members welcomed the arrangement as a way to bolster Millis’ football numbers and give Norfolk Aggie students a playing opportunity. The committee asked staff to confirm how transportation will be handled for away practices and whether grant options are available to assist with costs.

Why it matters: The cooperative aims to strengthen a local athletic program by pooling students from neighboring districts, which can preserve opportunities for student athletes in smaller districts where participation numbers are low.
