Committee approves Fallon Elementary roof contract amid redistricting tensions

Colliers’ project lead told the committee the project budget was $2,937,000 and that the current estimate was running "probably spend a total of $2,400,000," meaning roughly $400,000 of the project cost would be local after the stated 83.2% reimbursement. She warned the committee that the $85,000 already spent on design would not be reimbursed if the project were canceled.
Some members objected to approving a major capital commitment while a redistricting effort remains unresolved, arguing it could bias future decisions about which buildings remain open. "I think it's a mistake to be approving roofs when you, for the last 2 or 3 months, you haven't done a redistricting committee," one member said, urging process consistency.
Administration and others argued the project aligns with the master plan and the district risks losing bond funding if work is not undertaken before the stated completion deadline. The chair noted that failing to complete the roof by Dec. 31 would forfeit roughly $2 million of the bond allocation.
After discussion, the motion to approve the Fallon contract at $2,011,000 was made, seconded and carried by roll call.
What happens next: administration will move forward with contracting and Colliers will continue project management and reporting; committee members asked for clearer FCI (facility condition index) comparisons and further documentation linking master plan recommendations and current priorities.
