The City Council used part of its May 26 meeting for ceremonial recognitions. Mayor Mary Jones read a proclamation naming May National Foster Care Month and invited Casa de Amparo CEO Cathy Carpe to describe new and expanded services, including a federally funded transitional living program and plans for a psychiatric residential treatment facility. Carpe thanked volunteers and emphasized a continuum of care.
The council also proclaimed May 21 as Auditory Advantage and Hearing Accessibility Day and invited Teresa Barnes, founder of Auditory Advantage Group, to accept the proclamation and speak about her book and training program. Barnes emphasized hearing‑loss prevalence and urged businesses and institutions to adopt structural inclusion practices.
Finally, the council recognized staff and members of the public who performed CPR and used an AED to revive a participant during a chair‑yoga class on April 16. Amy Clark and Assistant Fire Chief William Melendez (San Diego Project Heartbeat) described the event; Melendez noted the regional program has placed nearly 12,000 AEDs countywide with 223 documented lives saved. Certificates were presented to responders and the survivor attended the meeting.
