Madison County — At a special meeting May 19, 2026, the Madison County Board of Supervisors met in closed session to interview candidates for the county’s EMS chief position and unanimously directed the county administrator to enter negotiations with the candidate selected in that closed session.
Chairman Carty Yowell called the meeting to order at the county administration auditorium. After confirming a quorum, Vice-Chairman James Jewett moved to adopt the agenda; Supervisor Nancy Sharman seconded the motion and the board voted unanimously to adopt it.
The board opened two public comment periods during the meeting but recorded no speakers. The agenda listed no old or new business for discussion in open session.
The board then voted to convene a closed session under Virginia Code Section 2.2-3711(A)(1) for personnel to interview EMS chief candidates. Supervisor Jud Buchanan made the motion to go into closed session; Vice-Chairman Jewett seconded it. The roll-call vote on the motion was recorded as aye from Supervisors Carty Yowell, James Jewett, Jud Buchanan, Mike Snider and Nancy Sharman; there were no nays, abstentions or absences.
After returning to open session, the board certified by roll-call that only matters lawfully exempted under the cited code section and identified in the motion had been discussed. Following the certification vote, Supervisor Buchanan moved — and Vice-Chairman Jewett seconded — a motion instructing County Administrator Jonathon Weakley to enter negotiations with the candidate selected during the closed session. The motion passed unanimously.
The meeting concluded with a unanimous motion to adjourn. The board’s meeting record notes the action to begin negotiations but does not identify the selected candidate; no contract or appointment was finalized during the public meeting.
