Resident flags higher Summit Home Healthcare rate in Verona contract compared with neighboring district

A West Orange resident told the Verona Board of Education on May 14 that a proposed contract rate for Summit Home Healthcare appears higher than rates the same provider charges in other districts.
"In the proposed contract, Verona would pay Summit Home Healthcare $80 per hour. The same provider charges South Plainfield, $65," David Burstein said during public comment, and suggested the board might revisit the rate before finalizing the contract.
Superintendent Diane DeGiseppe and staff responded that districts must compare the services provided before judging differences in hourly rates. "We have to compare whether or not they're providing the same services," DeGiseppe said. The board did not take action on the contract at the meeting; the commenter urged the board to review the rate before final approval.
Ending: The district said it will review scope-of-service details before finalizing contract terms and that agenda item B14 (the contract) remains on the board's agenda for action following staff review.
