Verona Board approves personnel, education and routine district resolutions; B22 recorded as abstention

The Verona Board of Education on May 14 approved personnel resolutions A1 through A15 and a series of education, facilities, athletic and finance items, recording one abstention on resolution B22.

The board convened at 7:09 p.m. and moved through the agenda with roll-call votes on grouped resolutions. Personnel resolutions A1'A15 were approved following a motion and second. The board then approved education resolutions B1 through B21; a board member stated they would abstain on B22. Athletics and co-curricular resolutions C1 through C3, facilities resolutions D1 and D2, finance resolutions E1 through E13 and governance/policy resolutions F1 and F2 were also approved by roll call.

Superintendent Diane DeGiseppe summarized staffing changes discussed as part of recent budget deliberations, saying the reductions reflected retirements and section consolidations rather than unilateral layoffs. She told the board the changes included one elementary counselor reduction, one elementary media (library) teacher, one elementary art teacher and one elementary music teacher; the academic-enrichment position was reduced to half time; a high-school math teacher position resulting from a retirement was not filled; two elementary retirements were not replaced; and a kindergarten "bubble" section was consolidated into a single class. She also noted administrators were finalizing class counts and certifications as part of budget planning.

Board votes were recorded by roll call; the transcript shows votes read by Dr. Riley and multiple motions noted on the record. The meeting adjourned at 7:32 p.m. The board set its next public meeting for May 28 at the Verona High School Learning Commons.

Ending: The board's approvals take effect as stated on the meeting agenda; the minutes and detailed vote records will be posted on the district website, the chair said.
