Morris County outlines 250th anniversary program: murals, AR experiences, boat parade and community events

Sarah, chair of the 250 steering committee and mayor of Menom Township, briefed the Morris County Board of County Commissioners Feb. 20 on plans and partnerships for the county's 250th anniversary commemoration.
Sarah said the steering committee includes county partners, nonprofits and municipal representatives and has secured partnership support from groups including the Highlands Council and the Morris Historical Society. She said a grant from the Highlands Council funds a digital marketing and social campaign to promote low-cost or free programming aimed at broad participation.
Planned initiatives include a 250th-themed brand toolkit for businesses, a 250th coloring book developed with County College of Morris to distribute to schools and homeschool groups, and a traveling mural that residents can contribute to at festivals and events. Sarah described an augmented-reality project in negotiation for Ford Mansion (and potentially Jockey Hollow) that would allow visitors to scan a QR code and experience historical scenes.
Key public events highlighted by Sarah include a Lego family-build historic-town event held in early February, the Rocky Hollow encampments on April 18-19 that organizers hope to expand, and a "Hot Sail 250" boat parade on Lake Hopatcong scheduled for July 11. Sarah also noted plans for a Morris County Patriots ball fundraiser at Ford Mansion and a 10K/5K history-focused run in November (target date Nov. 21).
Sarah urged that the committee's programming be accessible and inclusive: "Most of the programming that we are going to be talking about is either low cost or free," she said, noting outreach to municipalities and small businesses and the availability of municipal-customized merchandise links.
Commissioners asked about corporate sponsorships, business outreach and costume sourcing for living-history events; Sarah offered to provide printed brand-toolkit materials and coordinate distribution with county communications staff.
