Susan Young, executive director of the New Jersey Association of School Business Officials, said the business administrator role has expanded and is difficult to fill, but cautioned that extending reemployment indefinitely may not increase long‑term recruitment and urged additional conversations about pipeline solutions. Representatives from the NJEA and principals/supervisors groups said they were concerned about retirees working in roles that would otherwise contribute to pension funds and warned against removing caps that were designed as a stopgap. Committee members and witnesses discussed possible compromises such as a finite cap (for example, five years) or a process for commissioner approval when necessary.
The committee recorded a favorable release with committee amendments. Members said they would continue discussions with stakeholders about pension impacts, duration limits and the policy’s scope.
