Committee tables facility-naming policy after debate over donor recognition and two-thirds vote

A proposed revision to the district’s facility-naming policy prompted a heated exchange on Tuesday before the school committee voted to send the matter back to the Policy & Governance Subcommittee.
Mr. Sheehan questioned why the district would remove a two‑thirds vote requirement for naming facilities and add language encouraging philanthropic contributions. "Why are we removing the two-thirds vote, and why did we include the information that philanthropic contributions and support of the school district are encouraged?" he asked.
A subcommittee member read the language and the changes under consideration and committee members debated whether the proposed changes could open the door to perceived pay-for-play naming or reduce transparency. Several members said the language needed more context and a clearer rationale. Mr. Michaelson suggested referring the policy back to committee for fuller vetting; Mr. Sheehan moved to table and refer the policy, and the motion passed on a roll-call vote.
Committee members also discussed a separate "memorials" policy that clarifies processes for benches, plaques and other nonfacility recognitions and said the memorial policy helps principals and staff apply consistent procedures.
The naming proposal will return to the Policy & Governance Subcommittee for additional review.
