Holyoke School Committee approves superintendent and teachers’ contracts, refers policies and schedules budget hearing

The Holyoke School Committee on Tuesday approved a new superintendent contract, adopted a contract for district teachers, referred multiple policies to subcommittee review and set a public budget hearing for June 8.
Superintendent contract: A motion to approve the superintendent’s contract, effective July 1, passed by roll-call vote after a motion by Mr. Sheehan and a second. The superintendent will continue in the position under the approved terms.
Teachers’ contract: The committee moved and passed a motion to ratify the Holyoke Teachers Association contract. During the roll call one member was recorded as abstaining; the motion carried.
Policy referrals and procedures: The committee voted to refer the proposed 2026 wellness policy and several policy revisions (listed on the agenda) to the Policy & Governance Subcommittee for deeper review. Chair and committee members said the referrals will allow technical review of nutrition standards and other implementation details before a final vote.
Budget hearing and transfers: Finance & Operations reminded the committee that a public budget hearing is scheduled for June 8 at 5 p.m. The committee considered a proposed budget transfer (moving funds from teacher salary lines to other projects) that had been rejected by the subcommittee; in a full roll-call vote the motion failed.
Other routine approvals: The committee accepted the donations listed on the agenda, approved warrant reports, and approved meeting minutes from April 14 and April 6, 2026. The committee also authorized out-of-state travel for staff to attend the Massachusetts Urban Special Education Directors Conference in Falmouth on July 29–30, 2026; members discussed reimbursement practices and asked staff to reconcile costs after travel.
The meeting concluded with a motion to enter executive session for collective bargaining and litigation updates, which the committee approved by roll call.
