The Board of Education voted to accept two state-funded grants to fund school athletic and playground upgrades.
Trustees approved a Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) grant of $51,000 to replace the scoreboards at Carmel High School's baseball and softball fields. Board members credited state legislators and district staff who helped secure and process the award; administration confirmed the grant covers the full stated project cost.
The board also accepted a separate DASNY grant of $100,000 for inclusive playground equipment, split evenly between Matthew Patterson Elementary School and Kent Primary School. The administration said the state has approved the vendor under state contract and that the grant will fully cover procurement and installation costs. "This happens to be split $50,000 at each of the schools," the assistant superintendent for business said during the discussion.
Trustees noted existing adaptive equipment at some sites and said the district is exploring other grant opportunities to bring similar equipment to additional elementary schools. Trustee Torpey and others recommended board members and the public visit recently completed inclusive playgrounds in the region to review best practices.
Both motions passed unanimously. The board recognized the staff and community volunteers who shepherded the applications and thanked state legislative partners for their assistance.
