Old Lyme board agrees to pass credit-card fees to beach-pass buyers

The Board of Selectmen voted on April 20 to add a credit-card processing surcharge to beach-pass and trash-receptacle sales, rather than raising the base pass price.
Chair noted the town prints each parking pass for roughly $0.65 and that the current retail price has been $30 for years. Town staff reported processing fees of about $0.93 per transaction (and $1.71 for two-item transactions) and said those charges reduce the town's net revenue when customers pay by card. "It is appropriate to charge a credit-card fee to capture that expense," one selectman said during debate.
A motion to include the credit-card fee for credit purchases of beach passes and trash receptacles passed by voice vote. The chair said the town would publish fee amounts on the website prior to the May 4 sales start and that the fees would reflect the actual processing costs identified by the vendor.
The board did not change the base beach-pass price at the meeting.
