The Cultural Arts Committee spent a portion of its June 5 meeting discussing an Art Box concept and a range of programming ideas and operational clarifications.
Members raised liability and operational concerns about combining an Art Box and an Art Supply Box into a single public display and discussed the need to rotate who coordinates the box and who is responsible for taking custody of supplies. Committee members asked that an approved box design come back to the committee before staff review and board consideration.
Kalvin Hardesty summarized procedural steps for project approvals: committee approval of a design, staff review (Kalvin), review by the city manager, and final approval by the board of commissioners. The transcript specifies that Greta Meadows will design flyers provided to staff and that a designated city worker will be responsible for picking up purchased items and handling invoices for Finance.
The committee brainstormed programming ideas, including an Art-In-The-Park event with artist demonstrations, collaboration with the North Carolina Plein Air Art Festival (the transcript references the festival on May 18, 2025), theater presentations, a holiday performing-arts collaboration, and local filmmaker presentations. Members also discussed promoting monthly themes for the box and recruiting artworks from schools, clubs and the public.
Votes taken at the meeting were procedural: the committee approved the April and May minutes on a motion by Sue Steinhauser, seconded by Veronica Campos-Hallstrom, and later voted to adjourn. No procurement decisions or specific purchases were authorized at this meeting.
