Commissioners and committee debate Sunny Meadows RFI; public urges preservation

A committee formed to explore reuse of the Sunny Meadows property presented a draft request for information (RFI) on May 26 and asked commissioners for authorization to solicit proposals. The committee emphasized urgency—saying the building needs attention—but commissioners and members of the public raised questions about factual language in the draft regarding planned infrastructure.
Committee presenter Chuck Knox said the RFI is intended to solicit ideas and two potential lease options because the county cannot sell the property or expend county funds to renovate it directly. "This is a great facility...we have a time limit by the end of the year," Knox said, noting the committee’s interest in preserving the property.
However, one commissioner objected to a paragraph that states the county is "moving forward with construction of a new connector road" and asserted public documents do not justify presenting infrastructure as a near‑term certainty. Commissioners and committee members agreed to amend the RFI language to be more cautious—saying infrastructure is "anticipated but not guaranteed" or using phrasing such as "sewer and water may be possible in the future"—and to return the RFI to the commissioners after legal review. The committee agreed to incorporate edits and meet again within weeks.
Residents and preservation advocates also addressed the board. Tina Witham said she supports retaining Sunny Meadows for community and historical purposes, and a representative of the nonprofit Saving the Old Properties offered the nonprofit’s services to steward the property if the county seeks that option.
Commissioners stressed the RFI is not a commitment to demolition or to guaranteed infrastructure; the goal is to collect proposals and feasibility ideas while the committee completes due diligence.
