Madison BOE approves Chartwells contract amendment with modest meal cost increase

The Madison Board of Education approved proposed Amendment No. 2 to the Compass Group USA/Chartwells food-service contract as presented. The amendment is an annual-style adjustment to align meal-equivalency and administrative fees with inflation and industry costs.
Aaron (district staff) summarized the amendment as an amendment to the existing contract rather than a new contract. He said the increase for meal equivalency cost and the administrative fee was "in the neighborhood" of about 3.85–3.9 percent, which is slightly below the district’s five‑year average for amendments. He also said the district retains protection under the contract for up to $85,000 of loss.
"We're protected up to $85,000 of... loss," Aaron told the board when asked about contract protections.
Board members noted there were no changes to food offerings and that Chartwells’ terms were favorable compared with other districts. After a short discussion the board moved to approve the amendment; members voted and the motion carried unanimously.
Next steps: staff will execute the amendment and Chartwells may conduct limited menu reviews over the summer while major menu structure remains unchanged.
