Madison BOE awards Polson life-skills lounge renovation to Gilbane Construction

The Madison Board of Education unanimously approved awarding the Polson Life Skills and Lounge Area renovation to Gilbane Construction Company, with the board portion of the contract totaling $68,416.50 to be paid from a Connecticut DRIP grant.
Board Chair opened the item before the pledge and asked for a motion to award the renovation contract to Gilbane; after a presentation by district presenter Ben, the board voted in favor. Ben told the board that the original scope had been removed from an earlier restroom/doors project because of budget limits and that he found April 2024 design plans showing the life-skills space included in earlier bids. He said the room’s original scope would likely have cost roughly $300,000 but a reworked scope and use of Gilbane’s already-mobilized trade contractors brought the estimate down to about $179,000.
“We came out at a $179,000, and that's to basically gut and renovate the space, including appliances and everything else,” Ben said during his presentation.
Ben said the administration will use about $110,000 of leftover funds from the 2024 restroom and doors project and charge the BOE portion of the contract ($68,416.50) to the Connecticut DRIP grant, creating no net demand on the district’s general fund. Chair thanked Ben and colleagues for finding savings and said Gilbane had recently completed Neck River Elementary, giving the board confidence in the contractor’s work.
The chair called the motion; members voted and the motion passed with the board recording a 6–0 favorable outcome.
Next steps: staff will finalize the contract amendment with Gilbane and coordinate summer abatement and construction work while the building is shut down.
