Leon Villarreal, a senior at Mission High School, told attendees he was being honored by the City of Mission for both academic and athletic achievements, saying he is ranked in the top 10 in his class and was the district’s offensive MVP in basketball.
"It's an honor to be recognized for my academic achievements, to be honored by the city of Mission for doing this, to know that, like, all the work that I've put in these past 4 years is being seen," Villarreal said, describing balancing sports and studies as "a real accomplishment." He said the support of coaches and local role models helped him reach that point.
Villarreal said his family and community inspired him to give back. "My grandpa and a few of my role models growing up were a part of the city, and they did some stuff around the city that helps everyone, and I'm glad I'm able to continue the tradition that my family has started," he said.
He announced his college plans: "This fall, I will be attending the University of Texas at Austin and pursuing a sports management degree." Villarreal closed by thanking coaches, the city and his parents and extended family for their guidance during his high school career.
The remarks were delivered as part of a City of Mission recognition; no votes or formal actions were recorded in the transcript.
