Students urge stronger, more consistent campus security: IDs, drills and intercoms among recommendations

Students told the El Paso ISD board that gaps in campus security and inconsistent enforcement create safety risks and recommended a set of practical changes.

"There are rising concerns in student and campus safety across all campuses," said Cassie Ryan, a student representative from Andrews High School. Students described problems including unlabelled entrances, inconsistent ID enforcement, outdated drill policies and missing intercom coverage in gyms and cafeterias.

Presenters highlighted successful elements already in place, such as improved camera coverage and district walkie-talkie systems, but said the benefits are unevenly distributed. They proposed printing and distributing IDs in summer, consistent enforcement, chip-enabled ID cards for door access and clearer signage for visitor check-in.

"If we don't feel safe, then why should students come to school?" said Kayla Ronda of Bowie High School. Students also suggested more El Paso Police Department officers, security staff and crossing guards at campuses where they are needed.

Trustees praised the student testimony and asked administration to follow through where practicable. Superintendent Dr. Lusk told the board the district will ensure badge distribution on day one, provide summer training for principals and continue implementing technologies such as a —stop finder' for transportation.

Next steps: trustees asked staff to review student suggestions and return with practicable implementation steps, including cost and timeline information.
