Amherst honors volunteer Steven Barnas and recognizes nurses for National Nurses Month

Supervisor Lavin presented a proclamation honoring Steven (Steve) Barnas, who the proclamation says has walked to Willow Ridge Elementary School daily to greet students and help with morning arrival for eight years. The proclamation, read by the supervisor, noted Barnas’s ties to the Sweet Home community and commended his steady volunteer service.
Steven Barnas spoke briefly, thanking the Sweet Home School District, Willow Ridge principal Popolino and staff and Sweet Home Transportation for welcoming him: “First off, I just wanna quickly thank the Sweet Home School District for inviting me into this community… I am deeply honored and pleasured,” he said.
Superintendent Genesci of the Sweet Home schools also praised Barnas, saying the first person he saw when visiting schools was Steven and calling him “a staple at Sweet Home.”
Council member Zukau invited nurses Ashley Rich, Janine Lumia and Kelly Francis to the front and recognized Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital’s 50-year history of service to Western New York while presenting proclamations in honor of National Nurses Month.
The board took photos and thanked recipients; members encouraged community appreciation for volunteers and health-care professionals.
What to watch for next: The proclamation is ceremonial; no board action was required. Staff indicated follow-up contact for logistical items and photographs.
