Evanston commissioners approve $100 honorarium for lived‑experience speaker at May 30 mental‑health event

The Equity and Empowerment Commission voted to offer a $100 honorarium to a community member who shares their lived experience at a May 30 mental‑health community conversation, the body said at its May 21 meeting.
Co‑chair Jones moved the honorarium motion, saying, “I move that we offer a $100 honorarium to a speaker who shares their life experiences pending budget approval.” Commissioner Meher Mansour seconded the motion; a vote was taken and the motion carried.
The conversation will be held at Robert Crown (rooms B/C), with panelists the commission identified as Impact Behavioral Health, the Moran care team and others. Commissioners discussed room layout, AV placement and an informational table for pamphlets and partner organizations. Commissioner Radcliffe summarized logistics, noting materials can be dropped off at the Moran Center in the week leading up to the event and volunteers will set up and take down the table.
Commissioners also agreed to use QR codes and tablets to promote the commission’s Equity Scorecard survey at the event to collect community feedback. The commission said any honorarium payment is contingent on available funds in its new FY budget.
The commission closed the item by asking Commissioner Jasmine Winfield, one of the new commissioners, to help identify and contact a community member who might speak about lived experience. Follow‑up on the speaker selection and budget approval will be handled by staff and reported back to the commission.
