Health and safety committee presents annual report, emphasizes de-escalation training and crisis-team procedures

The school committee accepted an annual report from the Health & Safety Joint Labor-Management Committee (JLMC), which chronicled the group's work this year and recommended steps to strengthen staff safety and crisis response.
Co-chair Tina Conte said the committee expanded membership to include Unit D and other staff with relevant expertise and produced an action list that is "mostly completed" but includes ongoing items. Top priorities highlighted in the report were Safety Care de‑escalation training, clearer crisis-team roles and post-incident debriefing for staff and students. Tina said the JLMC is coordinating with state resources and the Department of Labor & Workforce Development task forces when appropriate.
The report also referenced operational steps already taken: a calming-space pilot at Hamilton and West Augusta, a training database and onboarding sequence for new hires, and work by the HR office to compile checklists and mentoring for staff. Committee members praised the collaborative format and asked about red/green card protocols and first-responder coordination; presenters said the fire and police are aware of school protocols and a liaison will continue to improve interoperability.
The committee took the report and thanked the JLMC for its work; further follow-up items will be carried into next year's agenda.
