The Greenburgh Town Board opened a public hearing on Sept. 11 to consider a one‑year agreement with the Village of Tarrytown to provide fire protection services to unincorporated residents in the Glenville Fire Protection District.
A town presenter explained that the contract engages volunteer fire companies from the village to provide service to an area of Greenburgh outside other local fire districts and stated the contract cost for 2023 as $293,169. “Without the services, they wouldn’t have fire service,” the presenter said.
During the hearing, Murray Bowden raised broader concerns about volunteer shortages in fire and EMS, argued for county‑level solutions and recommended brighter, more reflective apparatus for safety. Bowden said volunteers are increasingly scarce and urged the town to meet on record with traffic and engineering staff to improve safety related to fire/EMS responses.
After taking public comment, the board moved to close the hearing and leave the record open for seven days; the motion passed. The board did not adopt the contract at the Sept. 11 meeting; the record will remain open for the stated time before further action.
