Chickasaw County sets June 1 deadline for destruction of noxious weeds, names Palmer Amaranth for eradication

The Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors on May 18 adopted RESOLUTION NO. 05-18-26-32 notifying all property owners countywide that the deadline to destroy listed noxious weeds is June 1, 2026. The resolution lists Class A and Class B noxious weeds to be eradicated or controlled and explains enforcement options under Iowa’s weed law.
Palmer Amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) is identified as a Class A noxious weed that must be eradicated. The resolution instructs property owners, including those with land enrolled in the federal Conservation Reserve Program, to seek cooperation with U.S. Department of Agriculture offices if Palmer Amaranth is found on CRP lands. Class B weeds for control are listed and include Canada thistle, teasel, leafy spurge, bull thistle, multiflora rose, and field bindweed, among others.
The board’s notice cites Code chapter 317 (Noxious Weeds) and Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship administrative rules. It warns that failure to control noxious weeds can result in notices requiring eradication, daily fines, county abatement by the Weed Commissioner or deputies and assessments attachable to real estate tax for collection.
The resolution was adopted by roll call and the detailed proclamation and weed lists are on file with the Auditor.
