Nutley authorizes state grant application for school renovations; new school at 777 Bloomfield receives temporary CO

The Board of Commissioners voted to authorize the township to apply for a New Jersey Department of Community Affairs grant of approximately $250,000 to fund renovations to either John Walker Middle School (auditorium) or Washington Elementary School and to undertake a forensic investigation of the school district as needed.
Deputy Mayor Evans read the resolution authorizing application and explained that the department may award more or less than the requested amount; the resolution also authorized township signatories, including the deputy mayor and Chief Financial Officer Stephanie Santana, to execute grant documents if the award is made. "The township does hereby authorize the application for the grant ... approximately $250,000," the deputy mayor said.
Separately, Deputy Mayor Evans reported that final inspections were completed and a temporary certificate of occupancy was issued earlier the same day for the new school at 777 Bloomfield Avenue; staff and nurses were preparing the building to receive students in early September.
The board approved the grant-application resolution by voice vote and approved the temporary CO report as part of commissioner announcements. The resolution does not commit the township to specific work until a grant agreement is received and executed.
