Council reviews traffic studies for Melissa Lee and Linda drives, plans further engineering review

Council President Kuehn told the Jackson Township Council that recent traffic studies documented higher-than-expected speeds and volumes on two neighborhood streets, and said township staff and consultants will review development applications and engineering plans to recommend changes.
Kuehn reported Melissa Lee Drive (a cul-de-sac with 37 homes) registered an average speed of about 30.8 mph and a top speed of 76 mph in the study sample, with a weekly vehicle count of 3,387 (about 480 vehicles per day). Linda Drive (about 50 homes) recorded an average speed of about 30.6 mph and a maximum of about 59 mph, with roughly 6,530 vehicles in a week (about 930 per day), Kuehn said.
"The goal at this time is to plan to work together for a long term solution," Kuehn said, adding that the Traffic Safety Bureau and T&M will coordinate with the planning and zoning engineers and the police department. He said some development approvals that were granted in prior years are now under construction, increasing traffic in these neighborhoods.
Kuehn also said the township will include striping at county intersections as alternate bid items in the 2024 road-improvement program and that county engineers are investigating an intersection between Bennetts Mills and South Boston Road; the township’s traffic-division personnel will likewise review that site.
Council discussion focused on further engineering review and coordination with planning boards. Council did not adopt ordinance-level action during the briefing but directed staff to continue studies and return with recommendations.
