The Des Moines County Board on May 20 approved an accounts-payable request of $59,376.34 to expedite the first installment of a $90,000 grant described in the meeting as coming from "Ida Ida," an energy district referenced by Emergency Management staff.
"We received $90,000 for this grant," Shannon Prado (Emergency Management) said, adding the grant must be closed out by the end of June and requires no local match. Prado said portions of the grant will pay regional planning partners for administrative support, provide training for first responders, and purchase a movable, trailer-mounted solar-powered generator that can be deployed to sites in need during emergencies.
Board members moved and seconded the motion to approve the expedited payment so the vendor could be paid promptly and the project kept on its short timeline. The payment was approved during the consent/accounting portion of the meeting.
What happens next: county staff will process the payment to ensure the grant can be administered and closed by the grant deadline; Prado said she is excited to see the generator—s operational benefit for response teams.
