The Athens City Council took first reading of an ordinance on May 11 for a detailed site plan that would permit a funeral home and mortuary on Lots 3 and 4, Block 43 at 607 N. Prairieville St.
City Manager Elizabeth Borstad showed an aerial map and recalled that an original concept plan for the site was approved Nov. 24, 2025. She said 24 surrounding property-owner notices were mailed and that staff received no approvals or protests. The developer provided a site plan and landscape plan for council review.
Applicant DeDe Willis told the council she is looking forward to moving to Athens and opening the facility; neighbor Deborah Deas said the applicant answered her questions and she hopes the plan will be approved.
The ordinance caption was read for first reading and the item will proceed through the city’s zoning and site-plan approval process for future action by council.
