The Waynesville Town Council approved a special event permit May 26 for Waynesville First Friday and authorized a temporary social district for monthly downtown events from May through December, 5–8 p.m.
Jerry Jackson, gallery owner and event co‑organizer, described the program as a downtown economic revitalization and 'maker's economy' event that extends shopping hours and coordinates gallery exhibitions, live music and food and beverage offerings. Jackson said organizers will continue to coordinate with participating businesses, downtown stakeholders and public‑safety officials to ensure the event runs safely and benefits downtown merchants.
Staff noted a technical correction: the application checkbox for sale/consumption of alcoholic beverages should have been marked 'yes' so that social‑district procedures are properly documented; Jackson and staff confirmed they will correct the application record. Council approved the permit and social‑district guidelines by voice vote.
