Livonia board approves nonrenewal of two teaching contracts for 2026–27; authorizes recall process

The Livonia Public Schools Board of Education voted to not renew the teaching contracts of two listed teachers for the 2026–27 school year because of declining enrollment and then authorized administration to begin recall procedures as soon as circumstances allow.
Administration told trustees the district is managing enrollment shifts and that the reduction equates to two positions: a Spanish teacher and one ECP teacher at the Livonia Adult and Career Center (LACC). Trustees repeatedly emphasized the board’s desire to return staff to positions if openings arise.
"We know it is always extraordinarily difficult when folks receive a layoff notice," Superintendent Andrea Okwist said, adding that the district sought to minimize impacts and would attempt to recall affected teachers when feasible. The board approved both the discontinuance motion (moved by Liz Jarvis, supported by Crystal Frank) and a separate motion authorizing the superintendent or designee to carry out the recall procedure within 2026–27 staffing guidelines.
Board discussion noted that only two teachers were on the list and that administration will monitor openings and recall where possible. Both motions were adopted by roll-call vote.
