Public pushes North Beach parking options as staff readies real‑estate plan

During public comment Amanda Quintanilla (speaker 6) presented slides outlining historic parking proposals for the North El Camino Real lot and urged caution when considering large capital expenditures. "That was an estimate of $17,000,000," she said of a previously discussed tunnel under I‑5 and advised council to weigh alternatives.
Community development director Adam Matamian (speaker 13) said staff is preparing a comprehensive real‑estate asset management plan (REAMP) that inventories city parcels, identifies highest‑and‑best uses and will include the North Beach lot (1832 North El Camino Real) survey results. Matamian said staff intends to introduce the REAMP in June and bring a full plan back in August with recommendations and a public‑facing property inventory.
Council and staff also discussed coordination with county and regional partners on parking and event logistics for upcoming large events (including Olympic‑era planning), and staff said they will pursue design work for viable alternatives to the costly tunnel option so projects can be shovel‑ready when grant opportunities arise.
The city will include North Beach options in the REAMP and will present survey findings to the Beaches, Parks & Recreation commission in June before returning to council with a report and recommendations later in the summer.
