Wythe County installs new 911 CAD; commissioners hear about Flock cameras and drone pilots

Wythe County announced on May 4 that it has installed a new Southern Software computer-assisted dispatch (CAD) system intended to speed response times, and county staff reported 911 Dispatch remains two positions short of full staffing.
Deputy County Administrator Matt Hankins said the CAD system has been installed and that callers should notice shorter response times once staffing is fully in place. Hankins told the commission that 911 Dispatch is "two people away from being fully staffed."
Rodney S. Dunford asked about Flock cameras; Hankins confirmed the county has Flock cameras that report crime data to dispatch, can capture license-plate information and will notify the dispatch center when there is a match. Susan M. Branscome asked whether drones are being used to issue tickets on interstates; Hankins said the Shenandoah Valley has used drone programs but that the county has not been notified of an expansion of that activity here.
No policy or ordinance changes related to cameras or drones were proposed or approved at the meeting; commissioners received these items as informational updates.
