Halifax committee votes to opt out of school choice, citing fiscal strain

The Halifax School Committee voted unanimously April 27 to decline participation in the state school choice program for the coming school year, citing town fiscal constraints and concerns about class sizes.

The chair, who moved the motion, said the district could not "support any more students" given its financial position and that accepting choice students typically does not bring enough revenue to cover the cost of educating them. "I don't feel like in the fiscal situation we're in right now that we could support any more students," the chair said, adding that the committee would cite fiscal issues and class size as the reasons for withdrawal.

A committee member seconded the motion. During a brief roll call, Jody and Karen both voted yes, as did the chair, producing a unanimous approval to refrain from implementing school choice this year.

Committee members said the decision reflects broader budget pressures: the chair noted the committee had already made cuts in prior years and stressed the legal obligation to meet net school spending and maintenance-of-effort requirements to avoid losing grants. The chair pointed to a discrepancy between the committee's requested warrant figure and the warrant submitted to the town as part of the broader budget conversation.

The committee did not take further action on school choice beyond the vote; no next steps were announced specific to choice beyond notifying the appropriate authorities of the committee's decision.
