BCPS outlines rollout of MSDE math policy: training, crosswalks and summer work

Baltimore County Public Schools officials updated the board Wednesday on plans to align instruction with new Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) math standards and to expand access to higher-level math courses.
Dr. Mullenix and Dr. Anderson said last year was a preparation year across the system: leaders trained principals, department chairs and math leaders; they began a crosswalk between BCPS's current curriculum and the new standards; and they initiated a numeracy-development framework and MTSS-centered interventions.
"The standards are not changing drastically," Dr. Mullenix said, but the district has identified core competencies and a roadmap to implement them. BCPS has prioritized middle-school supports and is planning a 60-minute daily math block, expanded professional learning (May 28, June 18 and an August math summit), and exemplar lessons aligned to the new standards.
Dr. Anderson described school-level accountability and systems alignment: schools will use a customizable math-plan template with criteria and checkpoints, progress monitoring and interventions built into advisory or ASA time, and training around retrieval and spaced-practice strategies.
Officials said they are waiting for MSDE's list of high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) aligned to the standards but that local crosswalks and summer PD will position BCPS 'ahead of the state timeline. The district expects to continue collaborating with MSDE and neighboring districts while rolling out classroom supports, curriculum crosswalks and assessments.
