Police, fire chiefs report July activity; fire department begins downtown building-safety outreach

Fire Chief Eric Carpenter (S4) reported 113 total runs for July (28 fire calls and 85 EMS calls). Carpenter said the department tested 3,650 feet of hose and found 250 feet that failed, meaning only that smaller amount will need replacement. In response to a recent downtown building collapse, the fire department will undertake an outreach program to collect names, contact information and small floor plans from local businesses to improve emergency response preparedness. Carpenter said that project will probably take several months to complete.
Both departments invited questions and will follow up with council as needed.
