Commission hears requests for Recreation Incentive Fund matching grants; vote set for May 4

The Botetourt County Parks and Recreation Commission on April 6 heard presentations from local schools and community groups seeking matching funds from the county Recreation Incentive Fund. Director Victor Morales told commissioners the board will vote on the projects at its May 4 meeting and, if approved, projects could begin in June with reimbursements available beginning July 1.
Applicants and requested matching amounts included Troutville Town Park seeking $2,200 to replace and improve the playground border; Eagle Rock Elementary requesting $1,179 to install a Gaga Ball Pit; Greenfield Elementary seeking $3,100 for two Gaga Ball pits; Colonial Elementary requesting $10,231.43 for Gaga Ball improvements, additional playground equipment, concrete pads and picnic tables; Pathfinders for Greenways requesting $8,820 for bear-proof trash cans, informational kiosks and parking stops at Craig Botetourt Scenic Trailheads; Breckinridge Elementary requesting $7,000 for inclusive swings and adaptive equipment; and Cloverdale Elementary requesting $8,853.50 for inclusive swings and other accessible playground equipment. Mrs. Riggs noted the RIF fund previously covered two of three Gaga Ball pits at Colonial Elementary and suggested sharing lessons learned about durability with other applicants. Victor Morales said staff will connect applicants on vendor selection and allow applicants to amend applications if needed.
Commissioners raised maintenance and safety questions. Dr. Donald Scothorn suggested exploring combined adaptive/infant-toddler swings to maximize space; Mr. Buchanan and department staff discussed maintenance needs and vendor selection; Mrs. Rooney highlighted that Cloverdale’s playground is the county’s most visited. Pathfinders representatives displayed visual aids to show the trail amenities they would purchase with matching funds.
The Commission will consider all applications at the May 4 meeting; applicants were invited to attend.
